A very interesting letter home. I've seen other letters from this period from the 26th Division, and several make comment on their abundance of sugar "over there" while at home there seems to have been a shortage or rationing of sugar. I believe most of the letters written to the soldiers bemoaned the fact that parents could not easily bake cakes or send home-made fudge overseas.
I would also share the fact that mail and packages destined for the troops in the last half of December was intentionally held up so that it could be delivered on Xmas day.
Finally, it seems Sam is probably using some of the patriotic stationary supplied by the YMCA. This had US flags on the envelopes and stationary and was given out to the soldiers at YMCA "huts" during the war. The YMCA was much appreciated by the troops for their work in making life more comfortable when the troops were not "in the line" (trenches).
