Soldiers often refer quite casually to events that a civilian would think are extremely noteworthy. Sometimes they fail to note them at all. One of my great-grandfathers wrote in his journal on Nov. 11, 1918: “Was assigned to the depot all day cleaning rifles”–and nothing else.

Sam may have been at HQ behind the lines during the initial fighting involving the 103rd at Apremont. It’s hard to say since he was always on the move and maintaining liason among units. It certainly would be ironic for Sam to say only that he had managed to lose his toothbrush rather than mention why it had happened.
