Lena’s statement that “Bert has to register Sept. 3rd ages between 31-45″ refers to Selective Service Registration for the Draft (Conscription). At this point the outcome of the Great War was anything but assured and preparations were made to conscript older men if necessary to perform duty on the Home Front thereby releasing more young lads for work in the trenches.
